A fighter from Omaha, Nebraska, who was overlooked for most of his career, Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford struggled to secure high-profile fights under Bob Arum’s Top Rank. He finally secured his first high-profile fight in July 2023 against Errol Spence, earning a 9th-round stoppage victory in dominant fashion. Four years after his split with Top Rank, and a little more than two years after defeating Spence, Crawford has finally shown the world how great he is. It’s been a long journey, but Crawford has reached the pinnacle of the sport and has established himself as the greatest fighter of a generation. Whether or not Terence Crawford fights again, one thing is clear: we had the fortune of watching one of the greatest fighters in the illustrious history of boxing in our time.

“We have promoted a number of pay-per-view fights for Terence, all of which have lost money, a lot of money.” – Former Crawford Promoter Bob Arum.

Everyone who tuned in to Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford witnessed a remarkable moment of boxing history that we may never see again in our lifetime. Terence Crawford joined Henry Armstrong as the second fighter in boxing history to become a three-division undisputed champion with a unanimous decision victory over Canelo Alvarez. Crawford becomes the first fighter since before World War 2 and the first in the four-belt era to accomplish the feat.

Terence Crawford executed his game plan to perfection. He outboxed Canelo all night long with his superior footwork and speed. According to CompuBox, Canelo landed 32% of his power punches against Crawford, after averaging 46% in his previous 12 fights. Throughout the fight, Crawford out landed Canelo 115-99. What really made the difference was his jab. Something I highlighted in the preview article was Canelo’s abandoning his jab in favor of throwing more power punches in recent years. Alvarez threw 78 jabs, landing only 16, in comparison to Crawford landing 45 jabs while throwing 326. As always, Canelo was a little more efficient, landing 29.3% of his punches, while his opponent only landed 21.5% and he did have an 83-70 advantage on power shots landed; but at the end of the day, the volume, speed, and footwork of Terence Crawford were too much for Canelo.

At 38 years old, Terence Crawford has accomplished everything in the sport of boxing. He sits alone as the only boxer to become an undisputed champion in three weight classes in the last 88 years. He is undefeated at 42-0, and he pulled off one of the most impressive victories in boxing history by going up two weight classes to defeat another generational great in Canelo Alvarez.

“Every era has its guy that you can’t tell anyone from that era anything about. We lived through Michael Jordan. Try telling anyone who did that that LeBron James is better. Those who lived through LeBron James, there will be another guy come around in 20 years and try to tell them that, Bud Crawford is that, to this era of boxing.” – Max Kellerman stated post-fight.

Is there more to accomplish? As fans, we always want to see more from our favorite fighters. I can guarantee you that Turki Al-Sheikh will do everything in his power to get Terence Crawford back in the ring. He has unlimited money and resources to get a deal done, and given that this is the biggest, most lucrative, and high-profile event since Mayweather vs Pacquiao a decade ago, I do not think a rematch is off the table. However, Crawford can walk away from this sport with a storybook ending. Whether or not Terence Crawford fights again, one thing is clear: we had the fortune of watching one of the greatest fighters in the illustrious history of boxing in our time.
